When should I call 911?

  • To report an emergency that requires an immediate response from police officers, fire department, or an ambulance.

  • To report a situation that poses an immediate danger to life or property.

  • When there is a suspicious activity involving a person(s) or a vehicle that appears to have immediate criminal intent.

  • For any situation that requires the immediate assistance of an officer.

  • To report a serious crime, such as kidnapping, arson, or sexual assault.

Remain calm and patient while dispatcher asks you questions. Dispatchers need to know: who, what, when, where, and why.  Dispatchers will determine what type of assistance to send.

Stay on the line until the dispatcher tells you to hang up.

When should I call the non-emergency number?

The non-emergency number is (509) 634-2472

  • To report a nuisance, such as a noise or parking complaint.

  • To report a crime that did not just occur and the suspect(s) is not in the immediate area.

  • When you have questions about police activity in your area.

The dispatcher will determine how best to assign your call.  Calling 911 for a non-emergency situation does not make your call move to the head of the line; in most cases, it will delay the communication process.
